Becoming a good lacrosse player requires a lot more than just raw skills, a cool looking stick and a rocking nickname like Big Train, Cannon or Bloodfang.

Here are a 12 pointers (in no particular order) that should help you with your game. Not only will following these simple tips make you a better lacrosse player, but coaches and scouts look for these things.

1. Make all passes sharp, short, and to the outside, away from the defender ( I notice a lot of kids with hard shots make really weak passes-whip it!)

2. When you have the ball, never stand still

3. Move to meet every pass (Watch John Grant, Kaleb Toth and other pro's-they're never standing still)

4. Learn at least three different types of moves/dodges

5. Never make a pass to a man who is covered just to get rid of the ball

6. Go after loose balls fast and hard, you must have the ball!

7. Make full cuts - go through and out - don't cut at half speed or hang around the crease after your cut.

8. Make your picks like your life depends on it. Many players think that because they are standing there it's a pick-it's not.

9. Don't always run at the same speed, change of pace is a very effective method of getting open.

10. Remember there is no "I" in "TEAM". It may be corny, but it's true. Teamwork is a must!

11. Coaches at the highest levels look for effort and intensity. Players who give 100% every moment of every game and practice get noticed.

One last thing. It seems so obvious, but this his a career killer for many talented athletes. Be COACHABLE! Listen to your coach and follow instructions without the whining and complaining. Think about it. Why would a coach recruit someone who isn't coachable?

Now get out there and have fun!
